Work continues at the memorial site. The concrete walkway around the monument is poured!
Work is moving quickly on the memorial!
The foundation has been poured and the hole filled back in. Next comes the laying of the pavers and pouring of the concrete walkway around the memorial. This all should be happening over the next few days/week.
So far no problems!! The deepest part of the hole is dug and nothing was found that we weren’t expecting.
Soon we’ll begin to see some concrete poured!!!
The rain stopped and the clouds moved away for the groundbreaking today! It was a wonderful event with great support from the community!
Actual excavation starts tomorrow and progress rolls on from there.
We will post a more complete schedule soon along with pictures of progress.
We will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony on July 8th at 7PM to start construction on the memorial!!
The ceremony will be at the site of the memorial in the Buffalo Naval and Military Park on the Buffalo waterfront.
The placement of the memorial is marked for the guys from Dig Safely New York. They need to come out and make sure we don’t hit anything, except of course for the sprinkler system that we know will be dug up.
We found out that there is a sprinkler system in the Naval and Military Park. Fortunately we found out before excavation began!
A little reconnaissance was done to determine the exact location so we can plan out what needs to be done.
The Buffalo Bills 2014 Rookie Squad stopped by during their tour of Buffalo to find out about the WNY Iraq/Afghanistan Memorial.
An important part of the project is picking the pavers that will make up the base of the memorial. We found some that work well with the theme. The pavers in the picture below resemble the sand many of our Armed Forces walked on.
We received pictures from Galle Monuments of the stone that has been cut from the quarry.
